The study site is part of the Southern German escarpment landscape (Wuchsbezirk "Schwäbische Alb"). The strata of the White Jurassic are particularly characteristic for the landscape, hydrology and soil formation. The steep valley slopes are formed by up to 100 m thick Weißjura β layers. The flatter plateaus are formed by Malmmergel (Weißjura γ) and further layers of upper Malm.
In addition to geological differences, factors such as exposure and elevation are decisive for the different soil types. In 2019 the FVA Baden Württenberg included the site in the Level II monitoring network.
